Broad Canal Walkway
Boston, MA
The construction of a pile supported walkway over the Broad Canal and the installation of a floating dock with an aluminum gangway. The walkway consist of pipe pile supported bents with a wide flange pile cap beam, heavy timber framing including timber edge stringers and timber interior stringers as well as three inch timber decking. Architectural aluminum handrail and overhead lighting were also installed.
The piles were driven with an ICE 28c vibratory hammer with a Model 40 pile clamp and Manitowoc M80 crane. The pile driving rig was located on a 50’x60’ Shugart segmental barge. This marine plant setup also set the pile caps, timber stringers and distributed the timber decking. The handrail and lights installed from the completed timber deck.
Overall space in the canal was restrictive and the marine plant configured to account for this situation and provides suitable stability.
